Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) released a short trailer that can be found here on YouTube that shows us their new experimental game for the HTC Vive. The companies are calling their game a “cinematic virtual reality experiment”. This is a new exciting development for the system, having a major name like Star Wars for the release of a new system is a huge bonus for the system manufacturers. Even though this “game” is really just a proof of concept demo that looks like a game the brand recognition is incomparable.
Just because this is not set to be a full release doesn’t mean that we should not be excited. In the “game” you can expect to interact with R2D2, experience the beauty of wielding a light saber first hand, and engage in epic battle with a battalion of Storm Troopers.
The interaction with the light saber is perhaps the most intriguing part of the whole thing. We can expect it to really put the Vive’s critically acclaimed motion controller through its paces. Any self-respecting Star Wars fan is going to expect nothing but perfection in our first VR encounter with the forces of the Empire. We can only hope that the Vive developers and the games developers have worked together to present us with a seamless interaction.
On another note this is an extremely interesting development in what we can expect to become an all-out Virtual Reality Gaming War between the major manufacturers. Having a game developer like ILM taking sides with HTC this early on in the race is really going to set the bar for Oculus Rift. There is no doubt that HTC is perhaps already a little ahead of the curve when it comes to having the market tied up.
