Tips for Safely Cleaning a Windows 10 Registry

There is no doubt that we have all heard horror stories about using a registry cleaning app. They promise increased performance and the ability to “return” your PC to its former glory. Often times all we manage to do is destroy a perfectly operating OS.

This most often happens when someone downloads a registry cleaning tool and lets it have free reign, deleting everything that it sees fit. You can use a tool like this though in a selective manner to only remove troublesome entries in your registry. We have put together some tips that you can use to safely undergo this process.

  • The first thing you are going to want to do is download a reputable registry cleaning app such as the one available at
  • The next thing you want to do is extremely important, make sure you set a system restore point as a safeguard.
  • If you are using Auslogic’s cleaner the next step is going to be to use the menu on the left hand side of the window, this is used to select the desired registry for cleaning. Make sure that you use the “Check Safe Only” option.

At this point you will begin your scan, do not be alarmed if it finds hundreds or possibly even thousands of errors, this is perfectly normal. 95% of these “errors” have little to no effect on the function of your PC.

  • If you are unable to determine the specific registry error causing your issues you can select to “Repair All”. Though this is going to remove everything so it is a last resort. Then reboot your system and see if the problem is corrected or if you need to restore the PC.
  • Alternately if you are able to determine specific errors that you want to remove you can choose to “unselect all” and only remove the problem entries.
