The Real Science Behind ‘Passengers’

The new science fiction, space flick movie entitled, “Passengers”, is steering headlines due to it featuring possible real-life futuristic technologies and scenarios.

The “Passengers” movie which premiered in Dec. 21, 2017, takes place in a utopian future. However, despite it being a work of science fiction, it still has set the foundation for real science.

The film’s story revolves around a spaceship that contains 5,000 passengers and more than 100 crews. All of them are in the state of hibernation as their trip will take them 120 years to reach the planet that they will colonize.

Hibernation In Deep Space

However, the thrill starts when two passengers wake up 90 years earlier than what was originally scheduled. Now, John Bradford, the COO of SpaceWorks Enterprises, says that the very concept of human hibernation is indeed very plausible.

He says that NASA has already funded a series of research and studies that dig deep into stasis. Stasis is also called “semi-hibernation” by some.

NASA is said to be planning on using this for future Mars missions. With this, Bradford says that the movie portrayed hibernation accurately.

This is because when a person wakes up from a long hibernation, he or she will feel extreme exhaustion. He further says that during hibernation, the body doesn’t sleep. This causes the body to be extremely tired upon waking up.

This is the same scenario that the two persons in the movie experienced. However, medical hypothermia or the form of hibernation shown in the film doesn’t put the body in an optimal condition.

This was where the movie needed to lower down their scientific accuracy. Meanwhile, the movie’s spaceship is heading for planet Homestead II, which is 240 light years away.

Colonizing An Earth-like Planet

In the movie, the spaceship is said to be traveling at 50 percent light speed. This is why it takes them 120 years of traveling to reach the planet.

According to John Spaights, the screenwriter of “Passengers,” the planet was seeded with Earth-like life. This is the reason why the planet resembled a very similar environment to that of Earth.

With this, the scientific concept of terraforming takes place. This is another plus in the movie’s scientific realism. With the help of the human colonists who plans of settling in Homestead II, life would further be developed and harnessed to suit the biosphere of Earth-like life forms.

Inspirational Movie For Humanity

With all of these said, the “Passengers” movie inspires humanity to reach for the stars. Despite it being a mere Hollywood movie, it still has a ton of scientific accuracies and realistic scenarios that might happen in the future.

Truly, “Passengers” motivates us to keep looking at the heavens, as our survival as a species depends on it.
